  SUE WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

We are thrilled to announce and congratulate our wonderful Director, Sue Cox on receiving a top award for her work in the field of addiction.

Sue received her award at the Royal Society of Medicine on March 19th. The awards ceremony was sponsored by the Sierra Tucson Recovery Network in America, an International leader in the treatment of addictions, mental and behavioural disorders, and "Addiction Today'  the leading addiction professional journal. These awards are given for outstanding contributions by professionals in the community of addiction treatment and mental health. She received the top accolade of the day, the Gratitude Recognition Award for Lifetime Achievement" for her contributions to the field, the highlight of the breakfast ceremony.

Sue has worked in the addiction treatment world for over thirty years, and is a qualified addiction counsellor as well as an Acupuncturist, and founder of SMART UK. She is a member of the FDAP (Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals,) and a member of EATA (the European Association for the treatment of Addiction.) The SMART UK programme is used extensively throughout substance misuse services, many NHS hospitals and departments, all the major drug and alcohol charities and 112 UK prisons. More recently the SMART philosophy was used by the military mental health teams and was taken to Afghanistan. SMART UK also teaches Combat Stress which is the organisation that treats veterans of conflict. SMART UK is at the forefront of research and is now involved with their second major research project. Sue, along with her Acupuncturist colleague, Kim Wager, who is also a neuro-scientist, has gained a great deal of respect for SMART UK in the professional world.

Sue says, " Addiction recovery is my raison d’être, and has been for a very long time. Our commitment to ethical standards, evidence based practice, and research has taken a small formulae treatment out if the realms of a "nice to do" little complementary therapy, and into mainstream drug, alcohol, and mental health services”.

“I am particularly honoured by this recognition, because fellow addiction specialists have given it to me. This is not an area where anyone should "tinker" this is a serious life threatening condition and more people die from addiction than recover from it, so it demands a very tough holistic approach. And I am VERY tough! I had no idea I had been nominated, let alone chosen, it was a complete surprise. I am still a bit bemused by it all!”

“I have the best job in the World, I get to teach and create partnerships with the most extraordinary people, the prison service, the NHS, the military services, and input into so many different areas; Hell, we've even taught Nuns treating street sex workers from vans in the city centre! What a privilege it is to be instrumental in such work. To help break down so many barriers.  I also get to support peoples’ recovery, people like me, who will die without the right sort of interventions.  So really to reward me for doing something which is my passion, seems odd”.

“A bit like giving someone a box of chocolates and then an award for eating them! But I am also very grateful and humbled to receive it. And I will probably be still eating those chocolates until they give me a posthumous one!”
